Volunteers are the heartbeat of YouthCare.

Without them, we could not do the vital work of helping young people in crisis.

With them, we can end youth homelessness.

It takes a village, and we are grateful that the Gates Foundation is a part of ours.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming 20 volunteers from the Gates Foundation to one of our shelters. Their mission was simple yet impactful: deep cleaning and organizing the shelter to create a more welcoming and secure environment for the young people in our care.

Imagine walking into a space that feels clean, organized, and safe. For the young people we serve, many of whom have faced significant hardships, this can make all the difference. A clean shelter provides not just physical comfort but also a sense of dignity and respect. It allows our youth to focus on their future—whether that means pursuing education, finding employment, or simply having the mental space to dream and plan for what comes next.

The volunteers swept the deck, scrubbed the fridge, organized shelves, and cleaned bathrooms, transforming the shelter into a true sanctuary. Their efforts mean that every young person who walks through our doors is greeted with a space that feels like home—a place where they can feel safe and cared for.

“We all rely on other people every day. Volunteering is a way to pay back and ensure other people get what they need.” This simple yet poignant thought from a Gates Foundation volunteer embodies why volunteers are so valuable to YouthCare: they bridge the gap between the young people who need help and what they need to gain stability.

Kumi Kato, Business Partner, Grants & Contracts Services at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, expressed the Foundation’s commitment to service: “Many different teams at the Foundation do something like this—a Day of Service—where they go out and help local organizations, especially nonprofits, who could use extra help. Whatever projects they need, we want to be there to support them and uplift their mission. YouthCare’s mission aligns with the Foundation’s, so it feels like we are joining forces today.”

The importance of this work cannot be overstated. Jana Fry, another dedicated volunteer, shared her personal connection: “YouthCare is such a great organization. I’ve been volunteering and donating with YouthCare for a long time now. I have a son who’s 19, so serving that population of kids is really meaningful to me.”

The Gates Foundation volunteers put their values into action, making a tangible difference in the lives of our clients. Their work ensured that YouthCare can continue to offer spaces dedicated to the success and safety of young people in need.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Gates Foundation for their incredible support. Volunteers like them enable YouthCare to keep providing high-quality services that help young people thrive.
