Volunteers play an essential role in YouthCare’s work to support youth experiencing homelessness. In honor of International Volunteer Day, we sat down for a Q&A with one of our amazing volunteers, Viktória! Viktória is part of a fierce volunteer team at YouthCare’s main office; every Thursday she can be found sorting and organizing the incredible donations we receive from the community. She’s helped to transform our Basement Boutique and Holiday Gift Room to look neat and tidy so young people can find what they need to look and feel their best.
Thank you Viktória, and all of our incredible volunteers!!
Q: What are your preferred pronouns?
I use the pronouns ‘she/her’.
Q: Please tell us a little about yourself!
My family moved two years ago from Hungary. I have two kids, and have been a stay-at-home mom for the last two years.
Q: How did you find out about YouthCare and how long have you been a volunteer?
I worked as a social worker in Hungary and wanted to find something similar to support people. I’ve walked by the Orion Center before and researched YouthCare online. I’ve been a volunteer at YouthCare’s Main Office for about four months now and I also try to serve a meal at YouthCare’s UDYC engagement center once a month! My kids go to the daycare right next door.
Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering at YouthCare?
I love the atmosphere at YouthCare. The energy and open-mindedness are clear to see. Everyone is very welcoming.
What’s something new you have learned recently while you were volunteering?
Volunteering has pushed me to improve my English skills and also make connections since I’m new to the area!
Q: What has been the most challenging part about volunteering at YouthCare?
It was a little difficult to start because I was afraid to communicate in English with people. But I’m learning so much as I go.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not volunteering?
Spin classes! And spending time with my family.
Q: If you had to use one word to describe your volunteer experience with YouthCare, what word would you use?
Confidence-building!
Q: What advice would you give to first-time YouthCare volunteers?
Just do it! It’s been wonderful spending time here.
