SUMMARY:Special Commitee Meeting: Stablizing Human Service Contracts
DESCRIPTION:On June 6th\, at 1:30 p.m.\, in City Council Chambers\, Councilmember Mosqueda will be\nhosting a special committee meeting to hear from human service providers in the city. Our human\nservice providers have direct\, meaningful relationships with residents and provide vital and\nwide-ranging services to support Seattle residents on behalf of the City—ranging from shelter and\nlegal assistance for survivors of domestic violence\, to employment and food supports\, to services for\nthose in Seattle experiencing homelessness. Last year\, we heard from human service providers who\nwere working 100 hours a week\, were waiting in the same food bank/affordable housing lines as\ntheir clients\, and holding down second jobs. \nJoin us on June 6th at 1:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers as we hear from experts in the human service field\, Seattle residents who’ve received services\, and front-line human service providers.

SUMMARY:Eid Ul-Fitr
DESCRIPTION:Eid al-Fitr\, also called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”\, is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan\, the Islamic holy month of fasting. This religious Eid is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The day of Eid\, therefore\, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities\, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality.

SUMMARY:Away from the White Gaze: A Workshop for Anti-Racist Activists of Color
DESCRIPTION:NPARC is excited to host Toi Sing-Woo\, founder of New Directions Consulting\, to facilitate a workshop for NPARC members who identify as people of color. \nPeople of color can never escape from the centrality of whiteness even when we’re doing anti-racism work. People of color do not have the luxury to create spaces and build cross-racial relationships without the interruptions of white people’s comments and judgement. \nThis workshop is just the beginning of unlocking our minds from the white gaze. What does it take to forge cross-cultural\, cross-racial relationships amongst ourselves? As anti-racist activists of color\, we need to do our own work\, build trust with one another\, develop strategies that reflect our struggles\, and ensure our work is honored and respected. And finally\, we have a right to be in spaces where we simply can be – ourselves. \nCapacity is limited. Priority for NPARC members. Questions about membership? Contact membership@nparcseattle.org.

SUMMARY:Malcom X Day
DESCRIPTION:  \nMalcolm X Day is an American holiday in honor of the civil rights leader Malcolm X which is celebrated either on May 19 (Malcolm’s birthday)\, or the third Sunday of May. \nMalcolm X  and also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz\, was an American Muslim minister and a human rights activist. To his admirers he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks\, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Girlvolution Conference by Powerful Voices
DESCRIPTION:Girlvolution is Powerful Voices’ annual youth-led\, social justice conference! that invites the community to participate in collective dialogue and restorative change facilitated by youth voice and agency. Our Activistas program is a 12 week employment program for nine 14-17 year old girls who will be supported by 10 Adult Allies to create and present an interactive workshop on a social justice topic that impacts them and their community. \nOur theme this year\, Dare to Be _____\, is based on the powerful Audre Lorde and her quote\, “When I dare to be powerful\, to use my strength in the service of my vision\, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” This #SHEro was a queer\, black scholar\, activist\, poet\, author\, and more who left us foundational and profound lessons on how to navigate the world in a just and critical way. Under capitalism\, girls of color can overwhelmed with barriers. But when we are rooted in our power and united on our goals\, our strength to disrupt and fight back becomes a force to reckon with against the barriers of racism\, misogyny\, classism\, and more.

SUMMARY:Equity Leaders: A Workshop for Those Leading Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:Whether it is called diversity\, equity and inclusion\, multiculturalism\, or anti-racism\, the role of leading equity initiatives in the workplace can be challenging. Many organizations have created these positions in the past ten years\, and those hired are coming in without any clear direction. Equity leaders often feel isolated and can quickly become frustrated or feel overwhelmed. However\, if we can come together to collaborate and learn from each other’s mistakes and successes\, perhaps we can craft an easier path forward. As Paulo Freire said\, “We make the road by walking.” \nThis workshop provides an opportunity for equity leaders to share strategies for organizational change\, problem solve some of the challenges they face\, and to network. Each participant will be asked to bring an example of a success story\, strategy\, or tool to share. Everyone will be given time to discuss challenges and hear the best thinking from their colleagues. Facilitators Caprice Hollins and Ilsa Govan will share a model of multicultural organizational development and strategies for change we’ve identified over the past eight years in our work with hundreds of organizations. \n \nParticipants will… \n\nLearn tools for engaging in courageous conversations about equity work.\nBe able to identify stages of multicultural organization development and strategies for moving equity initiatives forward.\nCollaborate with other equity leaders by sharing resources and best thinking around challenges.\nDevelop a network of equity leaders for on-going support.\n\nFacilitators\nCaprice D. Hollins\, Psy.D. & Ilsa Govan\, M.A. \nCost \n\n$150 Early-Bird registration through Thursday\, March 21\, 2019\n$175 Standard rates apply beginning Friday\, March 22\, 2019\n\nRegistration includes free resources\, a light breakfast and afternoon snacks. No refunds given for any reason after April 5\, 2019\, although you are welcome to gift your seat to a colleague. \n

SUMMARY:Storytelling Strategies for Dismantling Racism
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This workshop is now completely SOLD OUT and there will not be a waiting list for this session.  \nPlease register early for the next workshop on May 2nd with featured storyteller\, Howie Echo-Hawk. \n\n \nFacilitators: Nikkita Oliver (featured) with youth storyteller\, Azura Tyabji\, Natasha Marin\, Fleur Larsen\, and Bert Hopkins. \n+ Bios Available Here: https://ssdr-apr2019.paperform.co/ \nStorytelling is an ancient human technology meant to encapsulate information and build connections. We are all capable of sharing our stories and more importantly\, to witnessing and hearing each other with openness and compassion. \nMany of us set out with the very best of intentions but are not always able to discern how best to implement our ideals. This course will allow participants hands-on practice using the fundamentals of storytelling: intentions vs. impact\, inciting action\, deep listening\, facing challenges\, and resolution; to bring about measurable and meaningful change in their lives and at their organizations. \nHow can we strategically explore and dismantle problematic racial structures in our organizations using our own personal stories? \nDuring this training\, facilitators will guide participants in the following: \n+ Exploring institutional narratives and the structures.\n+ Practicing deep listening\, especially with regards to the language of power & privilege.\n+ Role-play for navigating difficult conversations. \nJoin us in this training to explore how storytelling can be used to develop concrete strategies to help individuals and organizations actively engaged in anti-racist work. \n

SUMMARY:Unpacking & Interrupting Systems of Racial Oppression Training
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Fran Partridge & Marlon Brown\n(A light breakfast and lunch included) \nRacial Equity Consultants LLC (REC) aspires to create a world in which each and every human being is seen and valued for who they are and the talents\, brilliance and beauty they contribute to the healing of our communities \nWe begin with an anti-oppression framework vital to developing an in-depth analysis of how racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia and xenophobia became institutionalized and imbedded in dominant culture. This framework helps to highlight the institutional privileges and systemic inequities embedded in the current socio-political conditions that influence and affect our institutions. Through our cross-racial lens\, we purposefully and strategically confront the internalized and institutionalized power of race and racism.\nREC understands and teaches that while we are not to blame for the current inequities that people of color face\, we are responsible for changing the disproportionate social and institutional outcomes of the world in which we live. If we interrogate and transform the institutional policies and practices that continue to exclude and impact people of color and we vigilantly unpack and dismantle the system of racism\, we will create an institutional culture in which every community member thrives.\nTraining is a key part of organizational change work. Training increases awareness\, knowledge and communication in an effort to move towards positive cross-cultural communication\, challenging institutional racial inequities and changing internal organizational structure. Learning to talk about race and racism constructively within your organization gives members and staff tools and practices for consistently interrupting and counteracting racial bias. \n

SUMMARY:Promised Land Documentary Screening at University Heights Center
DESCRIPTION:Promised Land is an award-winning social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest: the Duwamish and the Chinook\, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they’ve long been denied. In following their story\, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still looks at tribal sovereignty. \n  \n \n
