SUMMARY:Summer Solstice (N. Hemisphere)
DESCRIPTION:In the Northern Hemisphere\, the June solstice (aka summer solstice) occurs when the Sun reaches both its highest and northernmost points in the sky. (In contrast\, the June solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky.) \nThe word “solstice” comes from Latin solstitium—from sol (Sun) and stitium (standing)\, reflecting the fact that on the solstice\, the Sun appears to stop moving in the sky as it reaches its northern- or southernmost point. After the solstice\, the Sun appears to reverse course and head back in the opposite direction.

SUMMARY:Special Commitee Meeting: Stablizing Human Service Contracts
DESCRIPTION:On June 6th\, at 1:30 p.m.\, in City Council Chambers\, Councilmember Mosqueda will be\nhosting a special committee meeting to hear from human service providers in the city. Our human\nservice providers have direct\, meaningful relationships with residents and provide vital and\nwide-ranging services to support Seattle residents on behalf of the City—ranging from shelter and\nlegal assistance for survivors of domestic violence\, to employment and food supports\, to services for\nthose in Seattle experiencing homelessness. Last year\, we heard from human service providers who\nwere working 100 hours a week\, were waiting in the same food bank/affordable housing lines as\ntheir clients\, and holding down second jobs. \nJoin us on June 6th at 1:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers as we hear from experts in the human service field\, Seattle residents who’ve received services\, and front-line human service providers.

SUMMARY:Eid Ul-Fitr
DESCRIPTION:Eid al-Fitr\, also called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”\, is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan\, the Islamic holy month of fasting. This religious Eid is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The day of Eid\, therefore\, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities\, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality.

SUMMARY:Away from the White Gaze: A Workshop for Anti-Racist Activists of Color
DESCRIPTION:NPARC is excited to host Toi Sing-Woo\, founder of New Directions Consulting\, to facilitate a workshop for NPARC members who identify as people of color. \nPeople of color can never escape from the centrality of whiteness even when we’re doing anti-racism work. People of color do not have the luxury to create spaces and build cross-racial relationships without the interruptions of white people’s comments and judgement. \nThis workshop is just the beginning of unlocking our minds from the white gaze. What does it take to forge cross-cultural\, cross-racial relationships amongst ourselves? As anti-racist activists of color\, we need to do our own work\, build trust with one another\, develop strategies that reflect our struggles\, and ensure our work is honored and respected. And finally\, we have a right to be in spaces where we simply can be – ourselves. \nCapacity is limited. Priority for NPARC members. Questions about membership? Contact membership@nparcseattle.org.

SUMMARY:Malcom X Day
DESCRIPTION:  \nMalcolm X Day is an American holiday in honor of the civil rights leader Malcolm X which is celebrated either on May 19 (Malcolm’s birthday)\, or the third Sunday of May. \nMalcolm X  and also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz\, was an American Muslim minister and a human rights activist. To his admirers he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks\, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history.
